The Department for Education, Children and Young People (DECYP) are proudly Tasmania State Service’s core child-centred agency. This means everything we do is to support children, young people and their families. We are working together to ensure all future generations of Tasmanians are known, safe, well and learning.

The rights of children and young people are upheld in all that we do, particularly the right to an education, to influence decisions that affect them, and to be safe from harm.

We provide education for early learners all the way up to young adults. The journeys of many young Tasmanians start with our Child and Family Learning Centres (CFLCs) and Launching into Learning (LiL) programs, aimed for children aged 0-5 and their families.

We continue to educate children as they work their way up our school system, including primary, combined, secondary and senior secondary schools.

Services that we are responsible for and recruit in are:

  • Child and Family Learning Centres.
  • Tasmanian Government Schools
  • Child Safety and Out of Home Care
  • Youth Justice Services
  • Libraries and the Tasmanian Archives

We want all young people to succeed as connected, resilient, creative and curious thinkers. It is young people who will soon lead Tasmania, and we must be their champions, to inspire and encourage them, to prepare them for their lives ahead.

Everyone at DECYP shares values of connection, courage, growth, respect and responsibility. These pillars guide our behaviour and inform our decisions, keeping us focused on our objective to improve outcomes for all learners. We are committed to providing a safe workplace for all employees.

Under our DECYP Strategic Plan 2024–2030, we are working to lift literacy, improve school attendance, and ensure our teachers are classroom ready and stay teaching for longer. We are also working to build the voice of young people in decisions that affect them. These improvements would not be possible without the inspiring work that happens across our department every single day

We are a large department, so we have many staff that fulfill needs in a spread of locations, particularly in schools and colleges, corporate services, child safety and youth justice, and library and archive services.

A career at DECYP is a career in shaping the future of Tasmania and its people. It is meaningful work in a meaningful place.
