Telling someone about something scary or uncomfortable can feel like a big step. You might worry about what will happen next or if you did the right thing. It is completely normal to feel this way.

A trusted adult should listen, take you seriously, and help you stay safe. You deserve to be heard and supported.

Someone will listen to you

A trusted adult will take what you say seriously. They might ask a few questions so they can understand what is going on and how to help. You can share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with.

You will not be in trouble for speaking up.

They will help you stay safe

The adult you tell should think about what needs to happen to keep you safe. This might include:

  • making sure you are not alone with someone who is hurting you
  • helping you get support
  • talking to other adults who can help.

You do not have to make any decisions on your own.

They might need to tell another safe adult

Sometimes the person you tell might need to share what you said with another adult who can help keep you safe. This could be:

  • a school counsellor
  • a wellbeing or support worker
  • a child safety worker
  • another trusted adult.

They should only share what is needed to help you. You are not expected to handle this by yourself.

You can get support

After you tell someone, you might feel relieved, confused, worried, or unsure. All of these feelings are okay.

You can talk to:

You can keep talking

You can keep asking questions, sharing your feelings, or checking in with the adult you told. You deserve to understand what is happening and to feel supported.

If something changes or you remember something new, you can tell them at any time.

What if the adult you told does not help?

Sometimes an adult might not respond the way they should. They might:

  • not listen
  • not take you seriously
  • tell you to keep it a secret
  • make you feel uncomfortable.

If this happens you can tell another trusted adult or contact a support service. You are allowed to keep asking for help until someone listens and supports you.
