NOTICE OF THE MAXIMUM WHOLE WEIGHT OF CONTROLLED FISH FOR THE COMMERCIAL DIVE FISHERY

AND

NOTICE OF THE PARTS OF THE COMMERCIAL DIVE FISHERY FROM WHICH THE CATCH MAY BE TAKEN

I, Dr Ian Dutton, General Manager (Marine Resources) in the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, acting pursuant to a delegation from the Minister for Primary Industries and Water hereby determine under rules 12, 13, and 14 of the Fisheries (Commercial Dive) Rules 2021 (the Rules):

A.  That the open parts of the commercial dive fishery are to be as specified in schedule 1, and this is to be effective from 12:01 am 1 September 2023 to 11:59 pm 31 August 2024 unless otherwise notified; and

B.  That the catch limit for the commercial dive fishery of shortspined sea urchins (species Heliocidaris erythrogramma) which may be taken in each fishery part is as specified in Schedule 2, and this is to be effective from 12:01 am 1 September 2023 to 11:59 pm 31 August 2024; and

C.  That the catch limit for the commercial dive fishery of periwinkles (molluscs of the species Lunella undulata) which may be taken in each fishery part is as specified in Schedule 3, and this is to be effective from 12:01 am 1 September 2023 to 11:59 pm 31 August 2024.

SCHEDULE 1

Northern part

being that area of State waters on the north coast of Tasmania (including the Kent group of islands, the Furneaux group of islands and King Island) bounded in the west by an imaginary straight line running due west from Bluff Point to the outer limit of State waters, and bounded in the east by an imaginary line from the northern side of the mouth of the Great Musselroe River at Musselroe Bay running due west for 100 metres, then following the shoreline 100 metres from shore to the northernmost tip of Musselroe Point, then running due north until intersection with the line of latitude 40°48'00"S, and running due east to the outer limit of State waters; and

North-Eastern part

being that area of State waters on the north-east coast of Tasmania bounded in the north by an imaginary line from the northern side of the mouth of the Great Musselroe River at Musselroe Bay running due west for 100 metres, then following the shoreline 100 metres from shore to the northernmost tip of Musselroe Point, then running due north until intersection with the line of latitude 40°48'00”S, and running due east to the outer limit of State waters, and bounded in the south by an imaginary straight line running north-east from a point at lat 42°10'19"S long 148°18'03”E to lat 42°09’51”S long 148°18’56”E, and then running due east to the outer limit of State waters; and

Central-Eastern part

being that area of State waters on the east coast of Tasmania bounded in the north by an imaginary straight line running north-east from a point at lat 42°10'19"S long 148°18'03”E to lat 42°09’51”S long 148°18’56”E, then running straight due east to the outer limit of State waters, and bounded in the south by an imaginary straight line running due east from a point at lat 42°46'02”S long 147°52'50"E to the outer limit of State waters; and

South-Eastern part

being that area of State waters on the south-eastern coast of Tasmania bounded in the north by an imaginary straight line running due east from a point at lat 42°46'02”S long 147°52'50"E to the outer limit of State waters, and bounded in the south by an imaginary straight line running due south from Whale Head near South East Cape to the outer limit of State waters; and

Western part

being that area of State waters on the west coast of Tasmania bounded in the south by an imaginary straight line running due south from Whale Head near South East Cape to the outer limit of State waters, and bounded in the north by an imaginary straight line running due west from Bluff Point to the outer limit of State waters.

SCHEDULE 2

The catch limit for shortspined sea urchin (species Heliocidaris erythrogramma) that may be taken in the specified period is 175 tonnes, and this is to be shared between the fishery parts as shown accordingly:

Northern part: 39 tonnes

North-Eastern part: 37 tonnes

Central-Eastern part: 45 tonnes

South-Eastern part: 44 tonnes

Western part: 10 tonnes

SCHEDULE 3

The catch limit for periwinkles (molluscs of the species Lunella undulata) that may be taken in the specified period is 54 tonnes, and this is to be shared between the fishery parts as shown accordingly:

Northern part: 16.2 tonnes

North-Eastern part: 11 tonnes

Central-Eastern part: 7.2 tonnes

South-Eastern part: 6 tonnes

Western part: 13.6 tonnes

Any expression used in this notice having a particular meaning under the Act or the Rules has the same meaning in this notice. All coordinates used in this notice are specified in GDA94.

This notice has the effect of determining the catch limits for periwinkles and shortspined sea urchins that may be taken from each defined part of the commercial dive fishery from 1 September 2023 to 31 August 2024. This is part of arrangements to control the total amount of periwinkles and shortspined sea urchins harvested in the interest of resource sustainability.
