NOTICE OF THE DATES OF THE CLOSED SEASON FOR THE COMMERCIAL GREENLIP ABALONE FISHERY AND NOTICE OF ABALONE FISHERY CLOSURE TO SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES

I, Dr Ian Dutton, General Manager (Marine Resources) in the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, acting pursuant to a delegation from the Minister for Primary Industries and Water, hereby determine under rule 9 of the Fisheries (Abalone) Rules 2017 (the Rules):

  1. That the dates of the closed season for that part of the commercial greenlip abalone fishery specified in schedule 1 are from 12:01 am 1 January 2024 to 11:59 pm 30 April 2024; and
  2. That the part of the abalone fishery specified in schedule 1 is closed to, or in respect of, the activities specified in schedule 2.

SCHEDULE 1

All that part of the commercial greenlip abalone fishery in State waters off the north-west coast of Tasmania enclosed by an imaginary line commencing where the line of longitude 144° 50’ 52.69” East meets the high watermark on mainland Tasmania near Harcus River, then running due north to the line of latitude 40° 41’ 01.45” South, then running directly east to the high water mark at Little Creek, then following the line of high water generally clockwise around the northern coast of Robbins Island to Guyton Point, then running directly east to the line of longitude 145o 06’ 17.51” East, then running due north to the line of latitude 40o 17’ 25” South, then running due west to the line of longitude 144o 42’ 1.72” East, then running due south to the line of latitude 40o 24’ 53.76” South, then running due west to the line of longitude 144o 26’ 19.03” East, then running due south to the line of latitude 41o 21’ 58.85” South, then running directly east to the high water mark at Wild Wave River, then following the line of high water generally north to the point of commencement.

SCHEDULE 2

While on a commercial fishing trip in State waters for the purpose of taking greenlip abalone (Haliotis laevigata) the holder of a fishing licence (abalone dive) must not enter the water by swimming or diving.

All coordinates of latitude and longitude specified in this notice are to be determined by reference to the Geocentric Datum of Australia (also known as "the GDA" or "GDA94") as defined in the Commonwealth Gazette No. GN 35, 6 September 1995.

Any expression used in this notice having a particular meaning under the Living Marine Resources Management Act 1995 (the Act) or the Rules has the same meaning in this notice.

The commercial greenlip abalone fishery in State waters off the north-west coast of Tasmania is being closed from 12:01 am 1 January 2024 to 11:59 pm 30 April 2024 in the interest of resource sustainability. The closure includes, in the north-west, fishing blocks 48 (excluding sub-block 48A), 49 (excluding Albatross Island), 5 and sub-blocks 6A, 6B and 6C only.
