Fisheries (Commercial Dive) Rules 2021
NOTICE OF THE DATES OF THE CLOSED SEASON FOR A PART OF THE COMMERCIAL DIVE FISHERY AND NOTICE OF COMMERCIAL DIVE FISHERY CLOSURE TO SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES
I, Rachel McKay, Acting General Manager (Marine Resources) in the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, acting pursuant to a delegation from the Minister administering the Living Marine Resources Management Act 1995 (the Act), hereby determine under rule 12 of the Fisheries (Commercial Dive) Rules 2021 (the Rules):
- That the dates of the closed season for those parts of the commercial dive fishery specified in schedule 1 are from 12:02 am 1 September 2026 to 11:59 pm 4 October 2026; and
- That the parts of the commercial dive fishery specified in schedule 1 are closed to, or in respect of, the activities specified in schedule 2.
SCHEDULE 1
- The area of State waters on the east coast known as Georges Bay, enclosed by an imaginary line commencing at Granite Rock Point, then following the line of high water around Georges Bay to the end of the breakwater at Blanche Point, then running straight to the point of commencement.
- The area of State waters on the east coast of Tasmnaian known as Derwent River, (excluding Taroona Waters Reserve and Research area, and Tinderbox Marine Reserve), bounded in the north by an imaginary straight line downstream of Lyell Hwy from latitude 42°46’43”S and longitude 147°03’23”E to the point of latitude 42°46’46”S and longitude 147°03’25”E, and bounded in the south by an imaginary straight line from the point of latitude 43°03'13”S and longitude 147°20'28"E to the high-water mark at Boulder Point, then running in an approximately north-east direction to Kellys Point at the point of latitude 43°03'50”S and longitude 147°21'29”E, then running due east to the point of latitude 43°04'04”S and longitude 147°27'18"E, then running due north to the high-water mark at the point of latitude 43°02'02”S and longitude 147°27'17"E.
SCHEDULE 2
While on a commercial fishing trip in State waters for the purpose of takingshortspined sea urchins (species Heliocidaris erythrogramma) the holder of a fishing licence (commercial dive) must not enter the water by swimming or diving.
In this notice:
Any expression used in this notice having a particular meaning under the Act or the Rules has the same meaning in this notice.
All coordinates of latitude and longitude specified in this notice are to be determined by reference to the Geocentric Datum of Australia (also known as "the GDA" or "GDA94") as defined in the Commonwealth Gazette No. GN 35, 6 September 1995.

This notice has the effect of delaying the opening of the Georges Bay (subblock 30D) and Derwent River (sub-block 18) catch -capped areas of the Commercial Dive fishery to the take of shortspined sea urchin until Monday 5th October 2026. This is part of arrangements to control the total amount of shortspined sea urchins commercially harvested in these areas in the interest of resource sustainability.
