NOTICE OF THE DATES OF THE CLOSED SEASON FOR THE COMMERCIAL BLACKLIP ABALONE FISHERY AND NOTICE OF ABALONE FISHERY CLOSURE TO SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES
I, Dr David Midson, General Manager (Marine Resources) in the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, acting pursuant to a delegation from the Minister administering the Living Marine Resources Management Act 1995 (the Act), hereby determine under rule 9 of the Fisheries (Abalone) Rules 2017 (the Rules):
- That the dates of the closed season for those parts of the commercial Blacklip Abalone fishery specified in schedule 1 are from 12:01 am 1 April 2026; and
- That the parts of the commercial Blackip Abalone fishery specified in schedule 1 are closed to, or in respect of, the activities specified in schedule 2.
SCHEDULE 1
All that part of the commercial Blacklip Abalone fishery in State waters in the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, Derwent River, and Betsey Island areas within an area bounded by an imaginary line commencing at the high water mark of Big Lagoon Beach at the point of latitude 43°30'45.9"S and longitude 146°57'12.9"E, then running directly east to the point of latitude 43°30'45.9"S and longitude 147°10'41"E, then running directly south to the point of latitude 43°34'16.6"S and longitude 147°10'44.2"E, then running directly east to the point of latitude 43°34'16.6"S and longitude 147°19'27"E, then running directly north to the high water mark closest to the point of latitude 43°30'08.4"S and longitude 147°19'27"E at Boreel Head, then following the line of high water generally north-west around South Bruny Island and Cape Bruny and then generally north-east to the high water mark closest to the point of latitude 43°04’02.6S and longitude 147°20’59.4”E at Boulder Point, then following the line of high water generally north-east to the high water closest to the point of latitude 43°03'50.4"S and longitude 147°21'28.4"E at Kellys Point, then running east directly to the point of latitude 43°04'20"S and longitude 147°34'57.8"E, then running directly north to the point of latitude 42°57'38.8"S and longitude 147°34'52.8"E, then running generally west to the high water mark closest to the point of latitude 42°57'33.2"S and longitude 147°32'30"E at Pipe Clay Head, then initially heading in a generally south-west direction to follow the line of high water around the waters of Derwent River and D’Entrecasteaux Channel to the point of commencement.
SCHEDULE 2
While on a commercial fishing trip in State waters for the purpose of taking Blacklip Abalone (species Haliotis rubra) the holder of a fishing licence (abalone dive) must not enter the water by swimming or diving.
All coordinates of latitude and longitude specified in this notice are to be determined by reference to the Geocentric Datum of Australia (also known as "the GDA" or "GDA94") as defined in the Commonwealth Gazette No. GN 35, 6 September 1995.
Any expression used in this notice having a particular meaning under the Act or the Rules has the same meaning in this notice.

This notice has the effect of closing the commercial Blacklip Abalone fishery in State waters of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, Derwent River, and Betsey Island areas in the Eastern zone of the fishery inclusive of blocks 14, 15, 18, and sub-block 17A from Wednesday 1 April 2026 until further notice.
