NOTICE OF THE DATES OF THE CLOSED SEASON FOR THE COMMERCIAL BLACKLIP FISHERY AND NOTICE OF ABALONE FISHERY CLOSURE TO SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES
I, Dr David Midson, General Manager (Marine Resources) in the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, acting pursuant to a delegation from the Minister administering the Living Marine Resources Management Act 1995 (the Act), hereby determine under rule 9 of the Fisheries (Abalone) Rules 2017 (the Rules):
A. That the dates of the closed season for those parts of the commercial Blacklip Abalone fishery specified in schedule 1 are from 12:01 am 1 April 2026 to 11:59 pm 31 December 2026; and
B. That the parts of the abalone fishery specified in schedule 1 are closed to, or in respect of, the activities specified in schedule 2.
SCHEDULE 1
All that part of the commercial Blacklip Abalone fishery in State waters:
1. off the east coast of Bruny Island enclosed by an imaginary line commencing at the northernmost point of Dennes Point then running directly to the point of latitude 43°04’47.82”South, longitude 147°29’34.11”East then running due south to the line of latitude 43°30’09.72”South then running due west to the high-water mark at Boreel Head, then following the line of high water generally north to the point of commencement; and
2. off the east coast of Tasmania bounded in the north by the line of latitude 41°52'05.86"South commencing at Peggys Point and running due east to the outer limit of State waters, and bounded in the south by the line of latitude 43°13'18.15"South commencing at Cape Pillar and running due east to the outer limit of State waters.
SCHEDULE 2
While on a commercial fishing trip in State waters for the purpose of taking Blacklip Abalone (species Haliotis rubra) the holder of a fishing licence (abalone dive) must not enter the water by swimming or diving.
All coordinates of latitude and longitude specified in this notice are to be determined by reference to the Geocentric Datum of Australia (also known as "the GDA" or "GDA94") as defined in the Commonwealth Gazette No. GN 35, 6 September 1995.
Any expression used in this notice having a particular meaning under the Act or the Rules has the same meaning in this notice.

This notice has the effect of closing the commercial Blacklip Abalone fishery off the East coast of Tasmania from Peggy’s Point to Cape Pillar and including east Bruny Island, inclusive of blocks 16 and 22 to 27, and sub-block 28A, from Wednesday 1 April 2026 until 31 December 2026 inclusive. This is part of arrangements to control the total amount of Blacklip Abalone harvested in the interest of resource sustainability and stock recovery.
