NOTICE OF THE DATES OF THE CLOSED SEASON FOR THE COMMERCIAL BLACKLIP ABALONE FISHERY AND NOTICE OF ABALONE FISHERY CLOSURE TO SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES

I, Will Joscelyne, Acting General Manager (Marine Resources) in the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, acting pursuant to a delegation from the Minister administering the Living Marine Resources Management Act 1995 (the Act), hereby determine under rule 9 of the Fisheries (Abalone) Rules 2017 (the Rules):

  1. that the dates of the closed season for those parts of the commercial blacklip abalone fishery specified in schedule 1 are from 12:01 am 23 August 2024 to 11:59 pm 31 December 2024; and
  2. that the parts of the abalone fishery specified in schedule 1 are closed to, or in respect of, the activities specified in schedule 2.

SCHEDULE 1

All those parts of the commercial blacklip abalone fishery in State waters off the south-east coast of Flinders Island and the north-east coast of Cape Barren Island within an area enclosed by an imaginary line commencing at the high water mark at Pot Boil Point closest to the point of latitude 40o 12' 35.79” South, longitude 148o 19' 50.69” East then running directly to the high water mark at Puncheon Point then following the line of high water generally south-east closest to the point of latitude 40o 23' 20.09” South, longitude 148o 26' 52.60” East at Thirsty Lagoon then running due east to the line of longitude 148o 36' 45.72” East then running due north to the line of latitude 40o 01' 02.40” South then running due west to the high water mark on Planter Beach closest to the point of latitude 40o 01' 02.40” South, longitude 148o 16' 44.80” East, then following the line of high water generally south to the point of commencement.

SCHEDULE 2

While on a commercial fishing trip in State waters for the purpose of taking blacklip abalone (Haliotis rubra) the holder of a fishing licence (abalone dive) must not enter the water by swimming or diving.

All coordinates of latitude and longitude specified in this notice are to be determined by reference to the Geocentric Datum of Australia (also known as "the GDA" or "GDA94") as defined in the Commonwealth Gazette No. GN 35, 6 September 1995.

Any expression used in this notice having a particular meaning under the Act or the Rules has the same meaning in this notice.

The following block will close to commercial fishing for blacklip abalone from 12:01 am 23 August 2024 to 11:59 pm 31 December 2024: block 36 only.
