NOTICE OF THE DATES OF THE CLOSED SEASON FOR THE COMMERCIAL BLACKLIP ABALONE FISHERY AND NOTICE OF ABALONE FISHERY CLOSURE TO SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES

I, Dr David Midson, General Manager (Marine Resources) in the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, acting pursuant to a delegation from the Minister administering the Living Marine Resources Management Act 1995 (the Act), hereby determine under rule 9 of the Fisheries (Abalone) Rules 2017 (the Rules):

  1. that the dates of the closed season for those parts of the commercial blacklip abalone fishery specified in schedule 1 are from 12:01 am 30 May 2025 to 11:59 pm 31 December 2025; and
  2. that the parts of the abalone fishery specified in schedule 1 are closed to, or in respect of, the activities specified in schedule 2.

SCHEDULE 1

All that part of the commercial blacklip abalone fishery in State waters off the south-east coast of Tasmania enclosed by an imaginary line commencing at the high-water mark of Boreel Head at longitude 147o 19’ 24.85” east then running due south to the line of latitude 43o 34’ 09.51” south then running due west to the line of longitude 147o 10’ 40.38” east then running due north to the line of latitude 43o 30’ 43.27” south then running due west to the high-water mark at Big Lagoon Beach then following the line of high water approximately north to Blubber Head then running directly to the high-water mark at Mays Creek then following the line of high water approximately south to the point of commencement.

SCHEDULE 2

While on a commercial fishing trip in State waters for the purpose of taking blacklip abalone (Haliotis rubra) the holder of a fishing licence (abalone dive) must not enter the water by swimming or diving.

All coordinates of latitude and longitude specified in this notice are to be determined by reference to the Geocentric Datum of Australia (also known as "the GDA" or "GDA94") as defined in the Commonwealth Gazette No. GN 35, 6 September 1995.

Any expression used in this notice having a particular meaning under the Act or the Rules has the same meaning in this notice.

The commercial blacklip abalone fishery in State waters off the south-east coast of Tasmania is being closed. The following sub-blocks will close to commercial fishing for blacklip abalone from 12:01 am 30 May 2025 to 11:59 pm 31 December 2025: sub-blocks 14A, 14B, 14C, 14D and 14E only.
