NOTICE OF THE DATES OF THE CLOSED SEASON FOR THE COMMERCIAL BLACKLIP ABALONE FISHERY AND NOTICE OF ABALONE FISHERY CLOSURE TO SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES
I, Dr David Midson, General Manager (Marine Resources) in the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, acting pursuant to a delegation from the Minister administering the Living Marine Resources Management Act 1995 (the Act), hereby determine under rule 9 of the Fisheries (Abalone) Rules 2017 (the Rules):
- that the dates of the closed season for those parts of the commercial blacklip abalone fishery specified in schedule 1 are from 12:01 am 4 December 2025 to 11:59 pm 31 December 2025; and
- that the parts of the abalone fishery specified in schedule 1 are closed to, or in respect of, the activities specified in schedule 2.
SCHEDULE 1
All those parts of the commercial blacklip abalone fishery in State waters off the west coast of Tasmania enclosed by an imaginary line commencing where the line of latitude 42° 59’ 28.41” South meets the high water mark at Low Rocky Point, then running due west to the line of longitude 145o 16’ 37.02” East, then running due south to the line of latitude 43° 25’ 42.59” South, then running due east to the high water mark in Faults Bay, then following the line of high water in a generally north-westerly direction back to the point of commencement.
SCHEDULE 2
While on a commercial fishing trip in State waters for the purpose of taking blacklip abalone (Haliotis rubra) the holder of a fishing licence (abalone dive) must not enter the water by swimming or diving.
All coordinates of latitude and longitude specified in this notice are to be determined by reference to the Geocentric Datum of Australia (also known as "the GDA" or "GDA94") as defined in the Commonwealth Gazette No. GN 35, 6 September 1995.
Any expression used in this notice having a particular meaning under the Act or the Rules has the same meaning in this notice.

The commercial blacklip abalone fishery in State waters off the west coast of Tasmania is being closed from 12:01 am 4 December 2025 to 11:59 pm 31 December 2025 as part of arrangements to control the total amount of blacklip abalone harvested in this area in the interest of resource sustainability. This closed area relates to commercial blacklip abalone fishing in fishing sub-blocks 11A, 11B, 11C, 11D and 11E only.
