Improving efficiency and productivity in the Tasmanian State Service

The Tasmanian Government is committed to a modern and responsive public sector that delivers value for every dollar spent.

Great ideas can come from anywhere, especially from those already working in the state service so we want to hear from you.

This portal provides a way for you to provide ideas for initiatives that the state service can implement to improve how we deliver programs and services.

Whether it's a quick win or a bold, long-term idea you can include up to five ideas on the form below, and you can send them anonymously if you’d prefer.

Please note that this is not the appropriate avenue for raising work related or personal complaints. Please direct these through the appropriate channels.

Frequently asked questions

What is efficiency and productivity in the public sector?

Efficiency means getting the most out of our resources (time, money, technology, infrastructure and people) while maintaining or improving the services we deliver.

Productivity is about how effectively we turn these resources into meaningful outcomes for Tasmanians.

While we are already delivering both in many areas of the state service, there is always room for evaluation and improvement.

This is not just about reducing costs. The aim is to:

  • deliver better outcomes for Tasmanians with the same or fewer resources
  • support a flexible, responsive workforce
  • remove unnecessary duplication and streamline processes
  • build a culture of continuous improvement and innovation
  • work smarter, empower staff and improve the systems that support us all.
What happens to my ideas?

All ideas will be reviewed by the Efficiency and Productivity Unit in the Department of Premier and Cabinet. Similar ideas will be grouped by theme with advice provided to government and agencies on opportunities for more detailed review.

We may respond to you if we need further information about your idea.

Why are ideas limited to 100-words each?

The 100-word limit makes participation quick and accessible. We're looking for core concepts rather than fully developed proposals at this stage. This helps us identify common themes and opportunities across government while efficiently reviewing what we expect will be a large volume of submissions. If we need more detail about your idea, we'll contact you directly or work with your agency to develop it further.

Can I submit anonymously?

Yes. When you submit an idea, you'll be asked if the Efficiency and Productivity Unit can contact you about your submission. If you select 'No', your idea will be submitted anonymously.

Can I email my idea to the Efficiency and Productivity Unit?

We encourage you to submit ideas through the Efficiency and Productivity Portal, as this ensures they're captured systematically and helps us review all submissions efficiently. We are unable to provide individual responses to ideas submitted via email.

Should I resubmit an idea I've already shared with management in my own department?

Yes, if you think it has broader application across the State Service. Your idea might work well in other agencies or contexts, and sharing it here helps us identify common themes and opportunities across government.

Do I need to tell my manager I'm submitting an idea?

No. You're welcome to submit ideas without discussing them with your manager first. However, if your idea is something that could be implemented in your workplace, we encourage you to talk with your team and supervisor about putting it into action.

Can I suggest an idea that has an upfront cost but will save money longer term?

Yes. We're interested in ideas that deliver better value over time, even if they require initial investment. When you describe your idea, it's helpful to note if there are upfront costs and explain the longer-term benefits.

How does this initiative relate to the efficiency work my agency is already doing?

This initiative complements your agency's own efficiency work. It provides a whole-of-government view of opportunities and helps identify initiatives that could benefit multiple agencies. Your agency's existing measures remain important, and ideas from this initiative may inform broader cross-government improvements.

Do you have a case study to share?

We're also looking for examples of efficiency and productivity already happening across the state service. Examples might include a streamlined process, a creative use of technology, or a new way of working. We want to showcase your success stories and help others learn from your experience.

You can share your case study by contacting us at epu@dpac.tas.gov.au.

Will good ideas mean cuts to public sector funding or jobs?

Efficiencies are required to support a sustainable budget. However we are also focused on finding ways to streamline activities and work more effectively to reduce the impact of budget pressures on the state service and on the services we deliver.

How can I keep up to date with progress of ideas submitted?

You'll receive updates through your department's usual communication channels.
