Government Response to the Macquarie Point Multipurpose Stadium Integrated Assessment Report

The Project of State Significance (PoSS) process provided valuable insights into the Macquarie Point Multipurpose Stadium proposal. The Tasmanian Planning Commission’s (the Commission) Integrated Assessment Report confirms the stadium can be safely built and operated with key impacts, such as traffic, noise, and environmental effects, capable of being effectively managed.

The Commission recommended against the Project, based on economic modelling, planning scheme constraints, and heritage considerations.

The Commission has completed its work, and the Government acknowledges and thanks it for that.

The Government Response outlines our position on the findings of the Commission’s Integrated Assessment Report and highlights the unique opportunities this project presents for Tasmania — now and for future generations.

We invite members of the public and Parliament to view the Government Response.

Please note that these publications are being provided for information purposes only. Public feedback is not being sought through this process. The government, in finalising its response, has given thorough consideration to preceding consultation processes.

Community views

The government has listened to a diverse range of community views and acknowledges the deeply held feelings of many Tasmanians: both in support of and in opposition to the project.

Feedback received during the government’s prior consultation on the project can be found here.

Next step: State Policies and Projects (Macquarie Point Precinct) Order 2025

On 18 September 2025, the Tasmanian Government announced its intention to introduce an Order into parliament in November 2025 to enable the project to proceed.

Under the State Policies and Projects Act 1993, the Minister for Housing and Planning may recommend to Her Excellency, the Governor of Tasmania, the making of an Order that:

  • specifies the conditions under which the project may proceed
  • identifies the relevant legislation and approvals associated with each condition
  • assigns responsibility for enforcement to the appropriate agencies

Any Order made by Her Excellency will have no effect until it is endorsed by both houses of parliament.

The Government is committed to ensuring all members of parliament have access to the information they need to make an informed. In line with our commitment to enhance working protocols across Parliament, further consultation on the final form of any Order will occur over the coming week.
