NOTICE OF THE DATES OF THE CLOSED SEASON FOR A PART OF THE COMMERCIAL BLACKLIP ABALONE FISHERY AND NOTICE OF ABALONE FISHERY CLOSURE TO SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES

I, Dr David Midson, General Manager (Marine Resources) in the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, acting pursuant to a delegation from the Minister administering the Living Marine Resources Management Act 1995 (the Act), hereby determine under rule 9 of the Fisheries (Abalone) Rules 2017 (the Rules):

  1. That the dates of the closed season for those parts of the commercial Greenlip Abalone fishery specified in schedule 1 are from 12:01 am 20 August 2026 until 11:59 pm 31 December 2026; and
  2. That the parts of the commercial Greenlip Abalone fishery specified in schedule 1 are closed to, or in respect of, the activities specified in schedule 2.

SCHEDULE 1

All those parts of the commercial Greenlip Abalone fishery in State waters off the coast of King Island bounded in the north by the line of latitude 39°30’S, bounded in the south by the line of latitude 40°16’01.4”S, bounded in the east by the line of longitude 144°12’56.7”E, and bounded in the west by the line of longitude 143°42’28.7”E.

SCHEDULE 2

While on a commercial fishing trip in State waters for the purpose of taking Greenlip Abalone (species Haliotis laevigata) the holder of a fishing licence (abalone dive) must not enter the water by swimming or diving.

In this notice:

All coordinates of latitude and longitude are to be determined by reference to the Geocentric Datum of Australia (also known as "the GDA" or "GDA94") as defined in the Commonwealth Gazette No. GN 35, 6 September 1995.

Any expression used, having a particular meaning under the Act or the Rules, has the same meaning in this notice.

This notice has the effect of closing the commercial Greenlip Abalone fishery in State waters of the King Island area in the Greenlip part of the fishery, inclusive of blocs 1, 2, 3 and 4, from Thursday 17 August 2026 until 31 December 2026.
