NOTICE OF THE DATES OF THE CLOSED SEASON FOR A PART OF THE COMMERCIAL BLACKLIP ABALONE FISHERY AND NOTICE OF ABALONE FISHERY CLOSURE TO SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES
I, Dr David Midson, General Manager (Marine Resources) in the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, acting pursuant to a delegation from the Minister administering the Living Marine Resources Management Act 1995 (the Act), hereby determine under rule 9 of the Fisheries (Abalone) Rules 2017 (the Rules):
- That the dates of the closed season for those parts of the commercial Blacklip Abalone fishery specified in schedule 1 are from 12:01 am 21 May 2026 until 11:59 pm 31 December 2026; and
- That the parts of the commercial Blacklip Abalone fishery specified in schedule 1 are closed to, or in respect of, the activities specified in schedule 2.
SCHEDULE 1
All that part of the commercial Blacklip Abalone fishery in State waters off the north-west coast of Tasmania within an area bounded by an imaginary line running from the northernmost point of Woolnorth Point to the point of latitude 40°37’14.40”S, longitude 144°41’37.87”E, then running due north to the line of latitude 40°16’58.41”S, then running due east to the line of longitude 145°06’50.90”E, then running due south to the line of latitude 40°40’53.37”S, then running due west to the line of high water at Guyton Point, then following the line of high water in an approximately north-west direction to Little Creek, then running due west to the line of longitude 144°51’01.60”E, then running due south to where it meets the high watermark on mainland Tasmania near Harcus River, then following the line of high water generally north-west back to the point of commencement.
SCHEDULE 2
While on a commercial fishing trip in State waters for the purpose of taking Blacklip Abalone (species Haliotis rubra) the holder of a fishing licence (abalone dive) must not enter the water by swimming or diving.
In this notice:
All coordinates of latitude and longitude are to be determined by reference to the Geocentric Datum of Australia (also known as "the GDA" or "GDA94") as defined in the Commonwealth Gazette No. GN 35, 6 September 1995.
Any expression used, having a particular meaning under the Act or the Rules, has the same meaning in this notice.

This notice has the effect of closing the commercial Blacklip Abalone fishery in State waters of the Hunter Island and Three Hummock Island areas in the Bass Strait zone of the fishery inclusive of sub-blocks 48B, 48C, 49A, 49B and 49C from 12:01 AM Thursday 21 May 2026 to end of season, 11:59 PM 31 December 2026.
