NOTICE OF THE DATES OF THE CLOSED SEASON FOR THE COMMERCIAL ABALONE FISHERY AND NOTICE OF ABALONE FISHERY CLOSURE TO SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES

 

I, Dr Ian Dutton, General Manager (Marine Resources) in the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, acting pursuant to a delegation from the Minister for Primary Industries and Water made on 13 July 2022 and acting pursuant to section 20(1) of the Living Marine Resources Management Act 1995 (the Act), hereby determine under rule 9 of the Fisheries (Abalone) Rules 2017 (the Rules):

A.    That the dates of the closed season for that part of the commercial abalone fishery specified in schedule 1 are from 12:01 am 17 August 2022 to 11:59 pm 31 December 2022; and

 

B.     That the part of the abalone fishery specified in schedule 1 is closed to, or in respect of, the activities specified in schedule 2.

 

SCHEDULE 1

All that part of the commercial abalone fishery in State waters off the south-east coast of Tasmania within an area enclosed by an imaginary line running from where the line of latitude 43° 04' 24.17" South meets the line of high water at Outer North Head, then running due west to the line of longitude 147° 34' 48.68" East, then running due south to the line of latitude 43° 14' 09.45" South, then running due east to the line of longitude 147° 43' 01.64" East, then running due north to the line of high water at Salters Point, then following the line of high water in an approximately north-west direction back to the point of commencement.

 

SCHEDULE 2

While on a commercial fishing trip in State waters for the purpose of taking abalone (genus Haliotis) the holder of a fishing licence (abalone dive) must not enter the water by swimming or diving.

 

Any expression used in this notice having a particular meaning under the Act or the Rules has the same meaning in this notice.

The commercial abalone fishery in State waters off the south-east coast of Tasmania is being closed from 12:01 am 17 August 2022 to 11:59 pm 31 December 2022. This closed area relates to commercial abalone fishing in fishing sub-blocks 20A and 20B only. Pending results of testing for PST in abalone in the area, you will be notified when the sub-blocks are to be re-opened. ​
