Living Marine Resources Management Act 1995

Notice - Dates of closing of the commercial blacklip abalone fishery in State waters off the north-west coast of Tasmania and off the south coast of Tasmania

Rule 9(1) of the Fisheries (Abalone) Rules 2017

Pursuant to the powers under the Fisheries (Abalone) Rules 2017 ("the Rules") that were delegated to the Director (Marine Resources) on 5 January 2018 by the Minister acting pursuant to section 20(1) of the Living Marine Resources Management Act 1995 ("the Act"), under rule 9(1) of the Rules:

  1. I determine that the dates of closing of the commercial blacklip abalone fishery in State waters off the north-west coast of Tasmania and in State waters off the south coast of Tasmania to the activities of the take of blacklip abalone (Haliotis rubra) by the holder of a fishing licence (abalone dive) are as follow:from 25 April 2018 to 31 December 2018 inclusive; and
  2. I also determine that, for the period specified in this notice, the holder of a fishing licence (abalone dive) while on a commercial fishing trip in State waters for blacklip abalone (Haliotis rubra), must not enter the water, by swimming or diving, in the closed areas specified in this notice;

where “State waters off the north-west coast of Tasmania" is defined to mean: State waters off the north-west coast of Tasmania bounded in the north by the line of latitude 41° 03' 13.74" South at Arthur River and bounded in the south by the line of latitude 41o 21' 58.85" South at Wild Wave River; and

State waters off the south coast of Tasmania" is defined to mean: State waters off the south coast of Tasmania bounded in the east by the line of longitude 146° 52' 15.62" East at Whale Head and bounded in the west by the line of longitude 146o 33' 38.70" East at Prion Beach.

Any expression used in this public notice having a particular meaning under the Act or the Rules has the same meaning in this public notice as it has in the Act or the Rules.

INFORMATION

The commercial blacklip abalone fishery in State waters off the north-west coast of Tasmania from Arthur River to Wild Wave River and off the south coast of Tasmania from Whale Head to Prion Beach is being closed from 25 April 2018 until 31 December 2018 inclusive in the interest of resource sustainability. The closure includes sub-blocks 5D, 6A, 6B, 6C, 13A and 13B only.
