Notice - Dates of closure of the commercial greenlip abalone fishery in state waters off the north-west coast of tasmania

 

Rule 9(1) of the Fisheries (Abalone) Rules 2017

 

Pursuant to the powers under the Fisheries (Abalone) Rules 2017 ("the Rules") that were delegated to the Director (Marine Resources) on 2 July 2018 by the Minister acting pursuant to section 20(1) of the Living Marine Resources Management Act 1995 ("the Act"), under rule 9(1) of the Rules:

 

1.    I determine that the dates of closure of the commercial greenlip abalone fishery in State waters off the north-west coast of Tasmania to the activities of the take of greenlip abalone (Haliotis laevigata) by the holder of a fishing licence (abalone dive) are as follow:

 

from 12:01 am 27 September 2018 to 11:59 pm 31 December 2018; and

 

2.    I also determine that, from the date stated in 1. above, the holder of a fishing licence (abalone dive) while on a commercial fishing trip in State waters for the purpose of taking greenlip abalone (Haliotis laevigata) must not enter the water, by swimming or diving, in the closed area stated in 1. above;

 

where: “State waters off the north-west coast of Tasmania" is defined to mean: the area of State waters adjacent to the north-west and west coasts of mainland Tasmania bounded in the west by the line of longitude 144° East, bounded in the south by the line of latitude 44° South, bounded in the east by an imaginary line commencing at the intersection of the line of longitude 145° 06' 17.82" East and the line of latitude 40° 17' 06.77" South, then running due south to the line of latitude 40° 40' 53.37" South, then running due west to the line of high water at Guyton Point, then following the line of high water in an approximately north-west direction to Little Creek, then running due west to the line of longitude 144° 51' 01.60" East, then running due south to where it meets the high watermark on mainland Tasmania (~ at point of latitude 40° 44' 20.02" South), then following the line of high water approximately west and south to the line of longitude 145° 06' 17.82" East via Woolnorth Point, then running due south to the line of latitude 44° South, and bounded in the north by the line of latitude 40° 17' 06.77" South.

 

Any expression used in this notice having a particular meaning under the Act or the Rules has the same meaning in this notice as it has in the Act or the Rules.

Information

 

The commercial greenlip abalone fishery in State waters off the north-west coast of Tasmania is being closed to control the total amount of greenlip abalone harvested in this area. The closed area relates to commercial fishing for greenlip abalone in fishing blocks 48 (except for sub-block 48A), 49 and 5 and down the west coast from 12:01 am 27 September 2018 to 11:59 pm 31 December 2018.
