NOTICE OF THE DATES OF THE CLOSED SEASON FOR THE COMMERCIAL GREENLIP ABALONE FISHERY AND NOTICE OF ABALONE FISHERY CLOSURE TO SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES

 

I, Dr Ian Dutton, Director (Marine Resources) in the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment, acting pursuant to a delegation from the Minister for Primary Industries and Water made on 12 November 2018 and acting pursuant to section 20(1) of the Living Marine Resources Management Act 1995 (the Act), hereby determine under rule 9 of the Fisheries (Abalone) Rules 2017 (the Rules):

  1. That the dates of the closed season for that part of the commercial greenlip abalone fishery specified in schedule 1 are from 12:01 am 1 January 2021 to 11:59 pm 30 June 2021; and

     
  2. That the part of the abalone fishery specified in schedule 1 is closed to, or in respect of, the activities specified in schedule 2.

 

SCHEDULE 1

All that part of the commercial greenlip abalone fishery in State waters off the north-east and north-west coasts of Tasmania enclosed by an imaginary line commencing where the line of longitude 144° 51' 01.60" East meets the high watermark on mainland Tasmania (~ at point of latitude 40° 44' 20.02" South) then running due north to where it meets the line of latitude 40° 40' 50" South, then running due east to the line of longitude 145o 06' 17.51" East, then following that line of longitude due north to the line of latitude 40o 17' 25" South, then running due west to the line of longitude 144o 26' 19.03" East, then running due south to the line of latitude 42o 08' 29.06" South, then running due east to the line of longitude 148o 36' 40.69" East, then running due north to the line of latitude 40o 39' 17.57" South, then running due west to the line of longitude 147o 46' 56.65" East, then running due south to the high water mark at Tomahawk Beach, then following the line of high water generally west to the point of commencement.

 

SCHEDULE 2

While on a commercial fishing trip in State waters for the purpose of taking greenlip abalone (Haliotis laevigata) the holder of a fishing licence (abalone dive) must not enter the water by swimming or diving.

 

Any expression used in this notice having a particular meaning under the Act or the Rules has the same meaning in this notice.

The commercial greenlip abalone fishery in State waters off the north-east and north-west coasts of Tasmania is being closed from 12:01 am 1 January 2021 to 11:59 pm 30 June 2021 in the interest of resource sustainability. The closure includes, in the north-west, fishing blocks 48 (excluding sub-block 48A), 49 and 5 and down the west coast, and in the north-east, blocks 31 and 39, and down the east coast.
