NOTICE OF THE DATES OF THE CLOSED SEASON FOR THE COMMERCIAL BLACKLIP ABALONE FISHERY AND NOTICE OF ABALONE FISHERY CLOSURE TO SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES

 

I, Dr Ian Dutton, General Manager (Marine Resources) in the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, acting pursuant to a delegation from the Minister for Primary Industries and Water made on 13 July 2022 and acting pursuant to section 20(1) of the Living Marine Resources Management Act 1995 (the Act), hereby determine under rule 9 of the Fisheries (Abalone) Rules 2017 (the Rules):

A.    That the dates of the closed season for that part of the commercial blacklip abalone fishery specified in schedule 1 are from 12:01 am 21 August 2022 to 11:59 pm 31 December 2022; and

 

B.     That the part of the abalone fishery specified in schedule 1 is closed to, or in respect of, the activities specified in schedule 2.

 

SCHEDULE 1

All that part of the commercial blacklip abalone fishery in State waters off the north-west coast of Flinders Island within an area enclosed by an imaginary line running from where the line of latitude 40° 01' 12.79" South meets the high water mark at Settlement Point, then running due west to the line of longitude 147° 37' 05.42" East, then running due north to the line of latitude 39° 35' 46.53" South, then running due east to the line of longitude 148° 04' 56.99" East, then running directly to the high water mark closest to the point of latitude 39° 45' 21.92" South, longitude 147° 58' 50.98" East, then following the line of high water in a generally south-west direction, via Stanley Point, back to the point of commencement.

 

SCHEDULE 2

While on a commercial fishing trip in State waters for the purpose of taking blacklip abalone (Haliotis rubra) the holder of a fishing licence (abalone dive) must not enter the water by swimming or diving.

 

Any expression used in this notice having a particular meaning under the Act or the Rules has the same meaning in this notice.

The commercial blacklip abalone fishery in State waters off the north-west coast of Flinders Island is being closed from 12:01 am 21 August 2022 to 11:59 pm 31 December 2022 as part of arrangements to control the total amount of blacklip abalone harvested in this area in the interest of resource sustainability. This closed area relates to commercial blacklip abalone fishing in fishing sub-blocks 37A, 37B, 37C and 37D only.​
