NOTICE OF THE DATES OF THE CLOSED SEASON FOR THE COMMERCIAL BLACKLIP ABALONE FISHERY AND NOTICE OF ABALONE FISHERY CLOSURE TO SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES

 

I, Dr Ian Dutton, General Manager Marine Resources in the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, acting pursuant to a delegation from the Minister for Primary Industries and Water made on 13 July 2022 and acting pursuant to section 20(1) of the Living Marine Resources Management Act 1995 (the Act), hereby determine under rule 9 of the Fisheries (Abalone) Rules 2017 (the Rules):

A.    That the dates of the closed season for that part of the commercial blacklip abalone fishery specified in schedule 1 are from 12:01 am 24 February 2023 to 11:59 pm 31 December 2023; and

 

B.     That the part of the abalone fishery specified in schedule 1 is closed to, or in respect of, the activities specified in schedule 2.

 

SCHEDULE 1

All that part of the commercial blacklip abalone fishery in State waters off the south coast of Tasmania enclosed by an imaginary line commencing where the line of latitude 43° 25' 42.59" South meets the high water mark in Faults Bay then following that line of latitude due west to the line of longitude 145° 40' 31" East then following that line of longitude due south to the line of latitude 43° 45' 43.49" South, then running due east to the line of longitude 146° 11' 20.21" East, then running due north to the line of latitude 43° 33' 53.35" South, then running due east to the line of longitude 146° 24' 25.01" East, then running due south to the line of latitude 43° 45' 43.49" South, then running due east to the line of longitude 146° 52' 15.64" East, then running due north to the high water mark at Whale Head, then following the line of high water generally west to the point of commencement.

 

SCHEDULE 2

While on a commercial fishing trip in State waters for the purpose of taking blacklip abalone (Haliotis rubra) the holder of a fishing licence (abalone dive) must not enter the water by swimming or diving.

 

Any expression used in this notice having a particular meaning under the Act or the Rules has the same meaning in this notice.

The commercial blacklip abalone fishery in State waters off the south coast of Tasmania is being closed to control the total amount of blacklip abalone harvested in this area. The closed area relates to commercial fishing for blacklip abalone in fishing sub-blocks 12A, 12B, 12D, 13A and 13B only from 12:01 am 24 February 2023 to 11:59 pm 31 December 2023.​
