NOTICE OF REVOCATION AND DETERMINATION OF ABALONE FISHERY CLOSURE TO SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES

 

I, Dr Ian Dutton, General Manager (Marine Resources) in the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, acting pursuant to a delegation from the Minister for Primary Industries and Water hereby revoke my determination of the dates of the closed season for the commercial greenlip abalone fishery and closure of the abalone fishery to specific activities made by published notice on 20 December 2022 relating to closing the specified area from Tomahawk Beach to Eddystone Point to the holder of a fishing licence (abalone dive) to the take of greenlip abalone (Haliotis laevigata) with a shell length less than 150 millimetres, with immediate effect.

 

Further, acting pursuant to rule 9 of the Fisheries (Abalone) Rules 2017 (the Rules), I hereby determine that the part of the abalone fishery specified in schedule 1 is closed to, or in respect of, the activities specified in schedule 2 for the period specified in schedule 2.

 

SCHEDULE 1

All that part of the commercial greenlip abalone fishery in State waters off the north-east coast of Tasmania enclosed by an imaginary line commencing where the line of longitude 147° 47' 01.46" East meets the high watermark on mainland Tasmania at Tomahawk Beach then running due north to where it meets the line of latitude 40° 39' South, then running due east to the line of longitude 148° 33' 31.88" East, then following that line of longitude due south to the line of latitude 40° 59' 42" South, then running due west to the high water mark at Eddystone Point, then following the line of high water generally north-west to the point of commencement.

 

SCHEDULE 2

While on a commercial fishing trip in State waters for the purpose of taking greenlip abalone (Haliotis laevigata) at any time in the specified period from 12:01 am 3 July 2023 to 11:59 pm 31 December 2023 the holder of a fishing licence (abalone dive) must not take greenlip abalone (Haliotis laevigata) with a shell length less than 150 millimetres.

 

 

Any expression used in this notice having a particular meaning under the Living Marine Resources Management Act 1995 or the Rules has the same meaning in this notice.

The commercial greenlip abalone fishery in State waters off the north-east coast of Tasmania is being closed to specific activities for a specified period in the interest of resource sustainability. The following sub-blocks will close to commercial fishing for greenlip abalone with a shell length less than 150 millimetres from 12:01 am 3 July 2023 to 11:59 pm 31 December 2023: sub-blocks 31A, 31B, 39A and 39B only.​
